Chapter 16

4. Who is Judith Miller? Should the United States have a federal shield law to protect reporters?

Judith Miller was a reporter for the New York Times who did a lot of coverage on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. A lot of her stories were proved to be false and inaccurate. She was sentenced to jail because she disclosed information revealing that Valerie Plame was a CIA agent. She would not reveal her sources and claimed reporter's privilege. I do believe that reporters should have some kind of protection. A good reporter would never reveal their sources to anyone because they won’t to be the best. I do believe that if what they have reported can put someone in danger than they deserve to be punished and the person who is giving out that information should be punished as well.

5. What do you think of the current movie rating system? Why or why not?

The current movie rating system is not bad. I mean they take the time to really evaluate what an age appropriate movie is. They understand that some content is not fit for all people. Such as a pg-13 rating shows parents and children the content may not be appropriate for a child under the age of 13. I personally think that anything that has any kind of full frontal nudity of a man or woman should be in the same rating. I mean how is it that a movie with naked women could be considered rated R but if u can see the whole frontal image of a naked man than it has to be rated X. If the audience is mature enough to see a naked woman than they should be mature enough to handle seeing a naked man. Other than that I believe the rating system is great and it works very well.

Chapter 15

1.What are your main concerns or criticisms about the state of media studies at your college or university?

I personally do not have anything negative to say about the media studies here at LR. I fell in love with my Communications class. When I first signed up for the class I thought it was going to be just another boring class but my teacher made it interesting and I have learned a lot. One of my really good friends is a Communications major and she always has wonderful things to say about her classes. I personally think that everyone should have to take at least one media class while they are in college. I think it is important to know the history and the future of our media.

3. Can you think of an issue that the media industry and academic researchers could study together? Explain.

I believe they could study children's behavior and see of the fact that they are exposed to violent material makes them become more violent. This study has been done many of times. In class we talked about the groups of children that were exposed to the violent material and then there was a group of children that wasn’t and these children were placed in a room with Bobo the clown and the ones who were exposed to the violence were the ones that were just literally beating the crap out of Bobo the clown. In the book there is even a photo of this sweet looking little girl and she is just going crazy on poor Bobo. That kind of study is where the media and academic researchers can work together.

Chapter 13

1. Are you exposed to popular culture from other countries? Why or why not? Give examples.

I personally do not feel that I am exposed to popular cultures from other countries. I don’t read a lot of stuff on other countries. Usually all I hear or read about has to do with our country and its culture. I mean I have been exposed to other countries such as all the talk about the recent Royal Wedding and I watched some specials on it. They kind of gave me an inside look on how a royal wedding goes down and what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. Just last night I was watching a show about the fashion at the wedding and someone said it was pretty much disrespectful for the prime minister's wife not to wear a hat to the ceremony. I find that quite weird because it is not often that you see anyone wearing a hat to anything here in the United States. I personally only know about my own culture which sounds bad because we should all know a little something about the countries around us. That is something I need to work on.

2. Do you read international news? Why or why not?

I do not read international news because the only news I really am exposed to is what I see on the internet or in newspapers. I usually don’t read anything except for sports or something that I am interested in. If the title doesn’t get my attention I am not going to read it. I have read some international news such as all the recent talk about Osama bin Laden's death and everything but that is only because it is pretty much EVERYWHERE and there is no escaping it. I am personally not a news kind of person. I don’t sit down to watch the news and the only time I really see anything it when it pops up on my twitter feed or on my yahoo home page.

Chapter 10

1. What are your earliest recollections of books? Do you read for pleasure? If yes, what kinds of books do you enjoy? Why?

When I was in elementary school we used to have library days. We would go to the library and sit in the reading circle and the librarian or our teach would read us a book and then we would go to our tables and sit quietly until the teacher picked our table. Once our table was picked we could go and look for two books to check out. One of my favorite books when I was a little girl was rainbow fish. It taught the importance of sharing with others. The colors on every page just drew me into the story even more.Im not an avid reader. I don't always have a book in my hand but I do like to read certain types of books. I love romance novels and I also love to read crime and mystery novels. They keep me on the edge and wanting to read more.

2. Would you read on an Ipod or a kindle? Why or why not?

I personally would not read off of an i-pod or a kindle. I really don't like to sit there and read something off of a screen because my eyes will start to blur and then I get a headache and once I get a headache I am done with reading. I just prefer to hold a book in my hand and read it because there is just something about holding that book and then its easier to save your place if you need to stop for any reason. I cant even sit there and read something off of my phone for long periods of time without having to blink like 30 times and look away so that I can get my focus back.

Chapter 9

1. What are your earliest recollections of magazines? Which magazines do you read regularly today? Why?

When I was younger I used to read Teen magazine. I loved to buy them and see whats the celebrities my age were doing these days. Reading the stories was entertainging becasue when your a teenager you don't really find a magazine that you can read and fully relate to. My favorite part of the magazine was reading the embarassing stories that people would put in there. I dont really read magazines today, but one I will pick up is Cosmo. It is a very interesting magazine and I find a lot of the material in it amusing and humorous.

4. Do you think Internet will eventually displace magazines? Why or why not?

I personally do not believe that internet will replace magazines. Like I said in my last blog about newspapers being replaced, a magazine is portable and can be taken anywhere to read. Of course now a days pretty much anyone can get the internet on their phone, but its still no the same as having that magazine in your hand. Plus, you dont always have coverage for the internet and who wants to sit there and read something on a small screen on there phone when they can pick up a magazine and hold it in there hands and read it.

Chapter 8

1. What kinds of stories, topics or issues are not being covered well by mainstream papers?

I think that mainstream papers only try to capture the attention of the older population. The only section that I personally reach for in the sports sectgion and that is because I know that those stories will be more apealing to me. I dont get into most of the stories in the newspaper. So i think that maybe they should start trying to publish more stories that a younger generation would want to hear about. Everyone is always saying that the youth has no idea what is goin on in the world. That is because we dont even attempt to pick up a paper becasue we know there is probably nothing in there that we care about.

3. Will blogs and other internet news services eventually replace newspapers? Explain your response.

I personally dont believe that they will replace them. Sure everyone loves to be on the computer and they read the news on the computer but it doesnt beat the fact that you can read a newspaper anywhere becasue you can take it anywhere you want. Normally people dont just carry about their computers and pull them out and start reading. The fact that the newspaper is lightweight and portable ispart of the reason that I believe blogs or other internet news services will not replace newspapers.

Chapter 7

Do you remember seeing a movie you were not allowed to see? Discuss the experience.

When I was a little girl and even now I find it hard to make it through a horror film. As a child if I even watched part of a scary movie I couldn't sleep by myself. So i would always end up in the bed with my mom. I remember going to stay the night with my cousins one night and my mom over heard my cousin say lets watch Scream tonight. I always envied my cousin because she was older than me and I didn't want her to know I was too scared to watch it so I said okay. My mom quickly came in there and said I was not aloud to watch it because I would be up for days. When my mom left we went into my cousin's room and we turned it on, always being sure not to let it get too loud because we didn't want to get in trouble. I thought that was the scariest movie. My cousin just laughed at me through the whole entire movie. I pretty much watched the whole movie with my head in the pillow. That night I couldn't sleep at all and when I went home the next day I just cried to my mom about how horrible and scary that movie was. I had to sleep with her for a few days.

How often do you go to the movie theaters today? How often do you play DVDs on a television at home, or watch movies on a computer? Which experience do you prefer and why?

My friend JP and I use to go to the movies at least once a week. There was always a movie that he wanted to see so he would drag me along with him. We don't go quite as much now because we are always so busy with school and he is always busy at work. I am always watching movies in my room. It doesn't matter if they are old or new. I hardly watch TV unless one of my shows are on. I don't normally watch movies on my computer because the screen is so small and i can never get in a good position to watch a movie because I gotta hold it and make sure it is still on the charger. My preference really depends on the movie. If it a new movie and I cant wait to see it then i will go to the movies and watch it. But I think maybe I do prefer to see a movie at home because then I can be as loud as I want and if I need to do something I can always pause it and come back and then I don't have to miss anything.

Chapter 5

1. Describe your earliest memories of watching TV. What was your favorite show? Which shows did your family watch together? Were there shows that you were not allowed to watch? Which ones and why?

I remember when I was little I loved to watch anything that came on the Disney Channel. Lizzie McGuire was one of my all time favorite Disney Channel shows. The problems that she faced were not too crazy and she was an all around cool character. I was super excited when they came out with the movie. There was one show that topped any other show on TV and that was Boy Meets World. My sister and I would watch that show every time it was on TV. It was funny and entertaining to watch. We always said if Eric Matthews was not on that show it just wouldn't be as great. As long as I can remember my family and I have always watch American Idol together. I wasn't a small child when it started coming on but I was young. We loved to watch the auditions and laugh at the ones who were just plain awful. We would always pick our favorites and we would call in an vote for them. Now we still watch American Idol, but we also love to watch So you Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars. My mom never told me that I wasn't allowed to watch a certain show but we knew not to watch anything too crazy. One show I never watched was South Park. I personally didn't find it appealing to me and I knew my mom wouldn't be okay with me or my siblings watching it.

2. How much TV do you watch today? Which programs do you try to watch regularly? What attracts you to your favorite programs?

I would say that I watch maybe 2 or 3 hours of TV a day. I really don't watch it much anymore because I am always busy. I do try to watch my favorite shows regularly. I love to watch Glee, One Tree Hill, and The Game. Those are my all time favorite shows. Comedy and Drama are what attract me to my favorite shows. One Tree Hill is a drama about a group of friends. I have watched them grow up and get married in the past few years. Anytime its on my eyes are glued to the TV. The Game is a kind of sports drama. The main characters are football players and their wives. It is a funny show and some of the main characters are super hot. I don't think i am shallow but i do watch shows that tend to have good looking people in them, but they don't all have to be good looking. I just like to have something to look at. I watch Glee because its has singing in it. I am a sucker for any kind of musical and this combines high school drama with music.

Chapter 4

Describe your earliest memories of listening to radio. Do you remember a favorite song? How old were you? Do you remember the stations call letters? Why did you listen?

When I was little we used to always listen to John Boy and Billy's Big Show. We used to listen to it every morning on the way to school. My mom loved them and it was always a good way to get a laugh in before a long day at school and it always kept us very quiet and my mom loved that. I don't remember the call letters from the station. When we weren't listening to John Boy and Billy we were listening to Kiss 95.1. This was when were in the mood for listening to music that we, the kids, actually knew. My mom always complained when we would listen to that and she would try to turn it, but we would always out vote her and turn it back because she could listen to whatever she wanted to when we got out at school.

How might radio be used to improve social and political discussions in the United States?

Talk shows are used to express political opinions. On the talk shows they usually do not endorse one politician over the other because of the fear of losing listeners who may not agree so they try to make everyone happy and give both sides. Some will take in call-ins and ask them about their opinions on politics. This way they can get other's opinions on certain issues. This spices things up and the listeners get the opinions of their fellow listeners instead of just the talk show host. I am not a fan of any talk shows that discuss politics. I am personally not into politics like that. I know that I should be but I just don’t get excited about politicians and listening to them bash their opponents or making promises that they most likely won’t keep.

Chapter 3

Who was your first favorite group or singer? How old were you at the time? What was important to you about this music?

My first favorite group was N'Sync. I loved those boys more than anything in the world. I thought they were the hottest and coolest guys ever. swore up and down that one day i was going to marry Justin Timberlake or Lance Bass. But since Lance has openly came out of the closet and said he was gay I won’t be marrying him anytime soon. I thought they were super cute and their songs were so hot. I loved to sit and just listen to their songs. I was around 8 or 9 years old. The music was very catchy and I think I liked it because the music was catchy and upbeat. My favorite song that they came out with was Bye, Bye, Bye. That was the hottest song. I knew the dance and all the words to the song. I actually knew all the words to most of their songs. I remember I had an N’Sync t-shirt that I wore at least one a week. It had their picture on it and when I didn’t wear it I used to love to just stare at it. I remember after my mom had washed it so much their faces started to fade and stretch out. My mom finally made me throw it away and I was devastated.

If you ran a noncommercial campus radio station, what kind of music would you play and why?

If I had the opportunity to run a noncommercial radio station I would try to make sure that everyone is happy and that everyone gets to listen to what they want to. I would probably start out by polling the students on campus and asking them what types of music they like. I understand that I would get a ton of different answers and I would try to make everyone happy and get all of the peoples choices played. I would have a day devoted to certain types of music and I would also have a request line to make sure that everyone gets a chance to hear what they want. I would also even leave it open for up and coming bands to bring me a demo and I would play it on the air and get the public's opinion on the music.

Chapter 2

What was your first encounter with the Internet like? How did it compare with your first encounters with other mass media?
I don't really remember the first time I used the Internet. I do remember being in school and going to computer class and I was so excited. That was my favorite class. I do remember when we first got to start using the Internet. It made me feel like such a big kid because you had to be in a certain grade before the teacher would even let you click on the icon. I just loved being able to go on their and play games just like my big brother and sister would do. I wanted to be just like them. So when I started to get to use the Internet I thought I was a big kid. I couldn't wait to get on the Internet. This was a big part of my life. I always had TV and radio in my life but when it came time that I could use the Internet I just felt like a top dog. Now its a part of my everyday life, but I cant tell you what I would do without it.

What possibilities of the Internet future are you most excited about? Why? What possibilities are most troubling? Why?
The Internet improves every year. I am very much excited about these new ways to chat with people such as Skype and Oovoo. I love the fact that I can Skype with my friends who live hours away from me like its no problem. I love to be able to look at them and just have a conversation. Its totally better than talking on the phone. I love how I can get Internet on my cell phone. I can have Internet anywhere I go as long as I have service. It just makes things limitless. One disadvantage I have about the Internet is the fact that it is so addicting. I do believe younger kids are becoming to caught up with things on the Internet. In my opinion they are becoming lazy because they can do everything on the web and get any kind of information off of it. That is another dislike. Unless you have some kind of block a child or anyone can look up virtually anything they wanted to and that could become a problem for future generations.

Chapter 1

11. Using music or television as an example, identify a performer or program you once liked but grew away from as you got older and your tastes changed. Why do you think this happened? Do you think your early interests in popular music or television have had an impact on shaping your identity?
When i was younger I was in love with Aaron Carter. His songs were so catchy and he was super cute I remember anytime he was on TV I had to watch it. I owned all of his CDs. I even used to dream that one day I would meet him and he would fall madly in love with me, I know its pretty silly, but a girl can dream cant she? I guess you could say I had a little bit of an obsession. I remember he guest starred on The Lizzie McGuire Show and I recorded it so I could watch it over and over again. In the show he kisses Hilary Duff and I remember thinking that I wished I was her so I could kiss Aaron Carter. As I got older I grew away from him for one because he pretty much stopped making music and I also found myself liking a different type of music. Then all of the sudden this super cute young star just became normal to me. I no longer thought he was the hottest guy in the world. I set my sites on someone else. I believe that as I aged I started to like more mature celebrities and my music taste became more mature. To this day my celeb hottie is George Strait. I know he is old but he makes amazing music and I think he is very good looking. I think one of the main reasons I started liking George Strait is because my mom is in love with him. We were always listening to his music and watching his movie Pure Country. We even recently went to one of his concerts in Charlotte, NC. we had the best time in the world just listening to him sing. I think that my earlier interest helped to keep me "kid-like". I do enjoy listening to an Aaron Carter CD every now and then but not like I used to. To this day i still believe that I still have some kid in me because I love to just let loose and be a kid, that's probably why I have such great chemistry with younger children. My early tastes helped me to keep the kid in me so that I can just pull it out every now and then and have fun.

13. Pick and example of popular media product that you think is harmful to children. How would you make your concerns known? Should the product be removed from circulation? Why or why not? If you think the product should be banned, how would you do it?
A TV show that i personally never got into was South Park. I remember as a child I loved to watch cartoon. One day i was flipping through the channels and I came across a show that looked like it would be funny. The characters were funny-looking and said some funny stuff. But after five minutes of watching the show I decided this was not the show for me. the kids in the show were cussing and displaying violent behavior. I don't believe this show should be in circulation because any child had the chance to to watch it because they will be fooled by the cartoon aspect of the show. This show teaches children vulgar language and inappropriate behavior and the minds of the younger generation are very impressionable. I believe if children watch this show they may begin to mimic the actions of these cartoon characters and that will not be good for them. I strongly believe this show should be banned because of the misleading cartoon aspect and the inappropriate material in the show. In order to get this done I would start by writing a letter to Cartoon Network stating my opinion and asking them to remove it from their network. I would start a petition and get as many people as I could to sign it to try and get it banned from television.
